Woman, 40, Charged With Assaulting Teen On CT Transit Bus

A 40-year-old woman has been arrested for assaulting a teen on a Connecticut Transit bus in September.

Marquita Mcelya of New Haven was arrested Thursday for the assault which took place on Sept. 22, said Hamden Police Capt. Ronald Smith.

According to Smith, a 16-year-old Hamden resident told police that she when she entered the bus in the vicinity of Dixwell Avenue and Putnam Avenue, Mcelya immediately began provoking her. 

According to the teen, Mcelya made demeaning comments to her. Mcelya then attacked her. The teen reported that Mcelya threw a cup of soda at her. She then “struck her an unknown amount of times with closed fist punches,” Smith said.

The teen also told police that Mcelya bit her on the forearm and she sustained injuries to her neck, face, and arm. 

She was transported to a medical facility for medical treatment by a family member.

Officer Justin Thibault conducted a comprehensive investigation, which led to an arrest warrant for Mcelya. Following her arrest, Mcelya was charged with assault, the risk of injury to a minor and disorderly conduct. 

She was detained on a court-ordered $20,000.00 bond, was arraigned at Meriden Superior Court later Thursday.
